L.  GED Information

What are the GED tests?

The GED tests are four tests in the areas of English, Social Studies, Science, and Mathematics.  The questions in each of these tests require you to use general knowledge and thinking skills.  Few questions ask about facts, details, or definitions.

Even though you have not finished high school, you have probably gained knowledge and skills through experience, reading and informal training.  The GED tests are designed to measure the important knowledge and skills (usually learned during four years of high school) that you may have obtained in a different manner.

Do you qualify to take the GED Tests?

  • Yes, if you are 18 or older.
  • Yes, if you are 17 if:
  1. You are within 60 days of your 18th birthday OR
  2. You have been out of school 60 days or more, and are within 60 days of when you would have graduated had you stayed in school OR
  3. You have been out of school 60 days or more and present a written request on letterhead from the military or a postsecondary educational institution, or prospective or current employer.
  • No, if you are 16.  Sixteen year olds may not test under any circumstances.

Recommended Procedures:

Go to the Adult Education Center at 35948 Susan Street in Yucaipa, CA and sign up to take the pretest which will predict whether you are ready for the test.  Based on the results of these pretests, the teacher will either recommend that you study for some or all of the tests, or he/she will advise you that you are ready to take the actual GED exam.

If you need preparation for the GED test a teacher will help you, using the preparation materials OR…purchase a GED preparation book at a bookstore, OR you can take the pretest online at GED.com and study on your own and then make arrangements to test.

After preparation you can register at GED.com and sign up to take the test.  You must pay online and choose your testing location.  The cost for the entire test is $140.00 or if you want to pay for one section at a time the cost is $35.00 per section.  If you do not pass any of the four tests you may retest; however, it is recommended you attend a GED preparation class to help prepare before you take the test again.
